When our kids hosted families from other communities for New Haven Youth soccer games this weekend, this is what our kids and their kids were forced to play in/on.
At least you know they mowed it at some point... sometimes nothing is done for example there are still trees down near the open field by the overpass... and the paths through the park are a mess. But maybe that's where the increase in our tax dollars will go?!?!
We did not have a chance to double cut this soccer field last week. Would you like to meet on-site one day this week? I will notify the park rangers about the trails
You need to remember that the Park Dept has a huge number of acres with a seriously reduced staff. Also Dina, what trails are a mess? As a Friends of Edgewood Green team, we work on trail maintenance every week and would like to hear where we should direct our efforts. Perhaps you would like to join us..
psyvertsen: I'm extremely appreciative of the work you and Friends do at the parks. Extremely appreciative. Thank you. I'm also sympathetic to the amount of work the staff must accomplish, but disappointed that this is the case given my property taxes. (Field conditions aren't an issue at our away games.) I'm also concerned about what Paul says about underworked positions parked at a desk. But look at the attached photo. This is a terrible representation of New Haven and the work you and the other Friends of Edgewood Park do. We shouldn't commit to hosting games if we can't do better than this. Kids are leaving the program because of it.
If maintaining these fields is a budget issue then NHP&R should offer other options. New Haven now has two artificial turf fields, Bowen & Amistad HS. I'm sure with a bit of ingenuity solutions could be found that allows use of these fields and configuration for U10 & U12 age groups. At the Met Oval in NY they use cones to line lower age fields on turf. I'm sure visiting teams would not object as this is a practice I've seen in my soccer travels. Lastly, for the scant amount of playable games this spring the Edgewood fields should be in better shape and better maintained.
Paul N, please run for mayor, or at the very least, become an alder. But I disagree that the tax increase will fund more union jobs - it's pretty clear that these funds are to keep NH a "sanctuary city" run by an ICLEI mayor. Pretty soon, NH will be nothing but illegals, refugees and Yale. We're getting out of here ASAP. NH is already one of CT's armpits, it's just going to get worse because Harp has endless $-eyed supporters who will keep her in charge. But you know, you reap what you sow, and I will laugh heartily at those who follow the agenda blindly; the outcome will not be the nirvana they are being sold.
Thanks for sharing all your comments/concerns. We do attempt to double cut the fields, however, with only 23 full time caretakers for 2,200 acres including over 20 playing fields when there is rain the job is nearly impossible to complete, especially as the majority of our fields are within flood plains and stay too wet for machines after any significant rain - we don't want to create ruts. While there are turf options, there is more demand for fields than we can accommodate.
Bill Carone our deputy for maintenance has addressed the incomplete job that was performed by the individual who was assigned to cut and failed to complete the interior of the goals. We do not anticipate that this mistake will ever be repeated.
