Thanks for reporting this. The safety concern should be addressed immediately. However, removing the cars may, perhaps counter-intuitively, actually make things worse here by encouraging people to drive even faster than they already do. Taking out obstructions just increases speeds and therefore the chance of a severe crash or fatality. Therefore the best way to reduce the chance of a collision here would be to apply traffic calming measures, such as adding more parking spots, bollards, chicanes, speed humps, or striping. These range from virtually zero cost to a few thousand dollars - much less than the police/fire overtime charges and other costs we pay to investigate a single crash.

This car is parked on this tight corner directly underneath a No Parking sign.

Thus car is always parked illegally in the curve.

This is an older post and is being closed, however, the Parking Division will be notified of this issue to monitor this area for illegal parking.

Thank you for doing NOTHING about this for one year and then casually closing it. Do something before there is a terrible accident with a school bus! You've been notified. You're now culpable if something happens.

The department has been monitoring this location, as was stated previously. We've sent a patrol vehicle out to identify any vehicle in violation but have not located any. Can you provide a time of day when this most likely occurs?

The best way to address the situation permanently would be the infrastructure suggestions above, which preclude vehicles from parking there. Despite city engineering claims, there are many cities that implement changes much more cheaply. Temporary infrastructure can last for several years until a permanent physical change can be created.

Sending a patrol vehicle every day gets expensive, although I greatly appreciate that TT&P Department is paying attention to this.

Our Alderman will be conducting a neighborhood meeting on Thurs., 1/17 at Davis St. School from 6:00 - 7:30. It behooves us to go.

Albert, Is that related to the charter revision hearing or will this issue be discussed as well?

No my meeting is an alderman night in for any issue within the ward. So this is separate from charter revision.
Can someone provide the license plate number of this car every time I look for it or travel up fountain terrace I do not see the car.

The meeting went well met with 12 constituents. None spoke of traffic issues on fountain terrace. But I am happy to meet with neighbors at someone's house and I can share how we got speed humps for vista terrace. I would be supportive of traffic calming approach for fountain terrace.

Speeding is not the specific issue, but rather an exacerbating circumstance. The issue is the BLIND crest at the hilltop on Fountain Terrace. When two oncoming vehicles meet at this point they are unable to see each other. Thus, the city has deemed the street too narrow for parked cars on either side of the street at and near the hill crest. Despite the clear "No Parking" signs on both sides of the street at the hill crest, there are commonly cars parked on both sides. A little more then a year ago my wife and kids were nearly wiped out by a school bus at this crest because the road was choked by illegally parked cars. I have also had many "close-calls" at this hill crest and can attest that even if both oncoming cars are going only 20mph the road becomes too narrow to easily avoid a collision. Add rain/snow/dark or a bit of extra speed and a nasty collision will be the result.

Ironically it appears that one of the offenders may be a New Haven Police Officer who resides at the crest of the hill.

I have observed in the past few weeks, fewer instances of cars parked on both sides directly at the crest. I've also noticed that brand new "No Parking" signs have been installed on the east side of Fountain Terrace. So if this is the result of someone letting people know about the danger, then Thank You to whomever deserves it. Thank You to those people who are no longer parking on the hill and crest.

Sergio, contrary to "scared to die's comment that speeding is not a specific issue, I bring to everyone's attention that I moved onto Fountain Terrace 47 years ago when it was a one way street. Several years later, a powerful, connected developer proposed to blast through a rock and build a highrise. Fortunately, we had two politicians living on the street who organized us to defeat the proposal, but it did not stop him from blasting, creating the hill and building and selling one family pre-fab dwellings along the hill. Since then, Fountain Terrace has become a short cut for Hopkins students and staff as well as Curtis Drive residents and roads exiting onto Vista Terrace and Edgewood Ave. School busses also move at a considerable rate of speed.
Yes, the parking issue is a serious one, as "scared to die" graphically points out, but so is the speeding which I have seen for over 35 years,and don't forget, there are no sidewalks.!
