Thank you for notifying us about this matter. I have contacted the Somerville Police. They will be monitoring this location for speeding issues. I have also contacted our traffic engineer about the crosswalk matter. Unfortunately Traffic & Parking has conducted a site review of this location. Traffic and Parking does not support the installation of a crosswalk at this location. In order to install a new crosswalk, the crosswalk must be ADA compliant. There are no ADA ramps at this location for a crosswalk across Broadway. In addition, traveling EB from the Powderhouse Rotary towards Ball Square there is both a horizontal and vertical curve east of the Powderhouse Rotary. These curves would adversely affect the sight lines of motorists for pedestrians in a crosswalk across Broadway at Bay State Ave. The stopping sight distance for a vehicle traveling the speed limit of 30 MPH is 200’. Due to the aforementioned curves vehicles would have difficulty stopping for pedestrians if there was a crosswalk at this location. In addition there are established crosswalks across Broadway at the Powderhouse Rotary and across Broadway. These crosswalks are approximately 450’ and 400’ respectively away from Bay State Ave. These crosswalks should be used to safely cross Broadway along the corridor from Powderhouse Rotary to Willow Ave. I hope this was helpful information.
