I'm not from Houston, but have never been in a city/neighborhood where it is okay to park a vehicle on the sidewalk. Why does the city/police not have these cars ticketed/towed?
There is no police presence in that area at all and the traffic is horrible because the roads haven’t been updated to reflect the growth in the area. It’s amazing someone hasn’t been injured walking on the street.
I am from Houston; we have an ugly car culture here, and we're spread out like an ice cube melting on the sidewalk. Attribute the ignorant car culture to the high number of oil/gas jobs, or the hundreds of square miles of city criss-crossed by roads and literally "the widest highway in the world". Unlike in cities with adequate mass transit, car ownership per capita is very high here. Many (not all!) people treat their cars as their second homes, and by extension, many see it as their birthright to park wherever and drive however they want. If we want to remedy this, we have to shift our thinking from "all about me" to "what about we". Tougher enforcement of existing ordinances and rules plays a major part in this, which is why I've become much more active on SeeClickFix. I'd also love to see active and strategic law enforcement monitoring of safety issues like this. Speeding and red light running is rampant in this city. Finally, since we can't force instant change, we have to persist in being good neighbors. Leading by example even when down the street they park inconsiderately.
